Wazhma’s Story

Wazhma Nasiri-Ahad

About me:

My name is Wazhma Nasiri-Ahad. I am an endocrinologist at NYU Langone, and I have been practicing endocrinology for about 2 years.  I am also a mom of two beautiful children, Ismael and Sofia. Aside from caring for my patients, I truly enjoy spending time with my kids, guiding them, and watching them grow.

What was it like transitioning to school in America?

The road to the life I have today has not been without its challenges. I moved to America at the age of 12, and started from the 7th grade. My biggest hurdle was learning English. As much as I enjoyed being a student, learning the language and getting comfortable speaking English was definitely a challenge for me. However, with dedication and practice, the English language became second nature to me. Once I was able to speak English proficiently, I was then able to truly enjoy my education and excel in my classes.

The further I got into my education, I realized that my dedication and determination all stems from my Afghan heritage. It is my Afghan heritage that has always, and will always, keep me grounded and motivated. Being Afghani, I carry on the tradition of resilience and strength of my people – it is the driving force that allows me to push through my limits and succeed in everything I do.

What is one advice you would like to share?

Life is always full of seemingly impossible challenges. However, dedication and hard work will always win. No matter how hard a task may be, never give up and continue to work hard. It will always pay off in the end.
